A very fun project with a different workflow for mapping objects around your subject. Both projects use different 3D scans of tree bark. The workflow sounds simple but is actually a labor-intensive process. First, your 3D object is laid out in 2D based on the UV map, and then the scan is overlaid and warped onto it. I learned this technique from an artist named "Mantissa." Messing around with this workflow always yields unpredictable and pretty awesome results.
The dramatic and somewhat mysterious look achieved by the top-down light was enhanced with effects in Davinci Resolve after color grading it in Photoshop.
In Version 02, I added some "light" displacement and sculpting to make it even weirder.
For both versions, I also included the Wireframe Modifier with an Emission Shader to achieve contrast not only in terms of light and color but also within the object itself.
I've experimented a lot with the technique and have some other versions stored on my hard drive, but I don't consider them finished yet. Perhaps I will add them to the gallery later.
